Make life resolutions that you can accomplish

As usual, at the beginning of every year, most of us come up with our new year resolution. A resolution to change habits, behaviours, to achieve a goal or target which seems impossible when set at other times. A new year resolution tradition was started from the west. This tradition was also followed by Asians over the years. There were many studies carried out by polling people to find the effectiveness or the success rate of new year resolutions.

In 2007, a study involving 3,000 people showed that 88 percent of those polled fail to accomplish their new year resolutions (source: Wikipedia). Even I had set many new year resolutions over the years and never accomplished not even once until I decided that it doesn’t work. It is just like being part of the herd mentality to follow blindly. My personal experience with setting goals did not work either, except once or, twice.

Last year, after reading Anthony Robbins’ “Awaken the Power Within”, my success rate with achieving my goals were at 80 percent. The book guided me with some adjustment that I had to do with myself for accomplishing life resolutions. I managed to reduce my weight from 86 kg to 77 kg in three months. At present, I am moving forward with most of my goals including setting up this of this e-learning website. The satisfaction was overwhelming, it made me feel good about myself and that, it is possible as long as you are committed to your goals. It was actually simple which was truly amazing but it is not easy, you have to put effort and practice every day.

This experience made me think about why I couldn’t achieve my new year resolutions. New year resolutions are like getting excited with your new clothes as you looked good in it, but as the clothes become seasoned, so is your excitement. Thus, it is just temporary motivation. By the way, even motivational words, speeches, videos will inspire you temporarily. Your spirit gets all fired up but you never provide the required fuel necessary to sustain the fire. So, what is the required fuel? The required fuel is not fixed or specific, only you can define that. It all depends on what can really make you move forward for achieving those goals, but you surely need to be focused on your goals.

My goal was written down, laminated and posted on my mirror. This is to make sure that my focus was always there. I had to block my negative thoughts which kept blurring my goal with picture of failure. Thoughts are so powerful that they control how things will turn out by preventing you from taking actions. Then, most importantly, it was the decision to abandon temporary instant pleasure for permanent pleasure when I achieve my goal. Like I said earlier, only you will understand how your mind work to find the fuel to accomplish your goal.

Today, it is a beautiful day. Tomorrow is a beautiful day. Every day is a beautiful day as long as you are breathing. Don’t make resolutions like everyone else during the new year and abandon it as the month becomes February or March. Decide now on your resolutions and work toward it, nothing can be accomplished without putting real effort. You have to pull yourself up, every time you have the slightest feeling or the smallest thoughts that is blurring your resolution with unnecessary pictures of failure.
